SPRING 2021 I WSOA

Bar structure

The task was to generate form utilizing non-standard design techniques for building creation. The plan was to employ informal design techniques to generate a 100' long bar-like structure and start considering its construction and material requirements. I chose to utilize interlocking technique to create this form. By creating spaces and adding material to the project, the interlocking chains structure has several colored open spaces where you experience a different energy in each one, and some small private enclosed spaces.

The exterior of the project is made of a warm tone plaster that creates a cozy and welcoming environment. Inside of the project you come across several open spaces where you can hang out. Each space has its color, where you experience a different energy in each space.

The colors chosen for the spaces are analogous to the color on the outside of the project. And the color application in the interior was to apply color on all the surfaces beside the top surfaces, keeping the outside look clean. However, depending on the angle, you can see glimpses of the inside-colored spaces from the outside.

Hostel

Utilizing the form generated from the previous assignment, we were tasked to align our bar structure on a given site into five units that could be oriented anyway we wanted. The main idea of this project is to generate a hostel on Sunset Blvd that uniquely engages with the site and properly utilizes our forms. I started by organizing five bars, three I placed on the ground where there are the communal spaces and back of the house spaces, the other two bars are for Lodging, so I placed them above to have more privacy for the people occupying the rooms.

The Hostel is composed of check-in reception, communal living room, outdoor living room, storage, loading, laundry, restrooms, outdoor dining, kitchen, administration offices, security guard room, rooms for two, six, and eight people, and an additional program which is a Restaurant.

View from the outdoor dining space, which has a colorful environment where you can enjoy your meal and hang out. It’s surrounded by greenery. And in this space, there are skylights that allows sunlight to get in.
